3.8.1. Error Handling During and After Download Errors

Errors may occur during the download process .  The current version of the Download Manager appears to have no means for auto-retry, leaving the user to fend for herself/himself.  Described here are some means of recovery.
As the download process starts, the Download Manager activates 3 separate processes so that it can try to download 3 series simultaneously.  Should an error occur, that process halts and cannot be restarted.  If all three processes  halt, the application hangs and never finishes.  Whether or not the Download Manager concludes, the user needs to examine errors if this message appears at the bottom of the Download Manager Window: "An error has occurred.  Please reconstruct the (see Figure below).  An "Error" status will appear in the right-hand column, and a message appears at the bottom of the Download Manager Window: "An error has occurred.  Please reconstruct the data basket with unloaded image series" (see Figure below).  Note also the "Error" in the Status column to the far right. The user would then expand the window and adjust the column widths in order to note the Patient ID, Study Instance UID, Series Instance UID, and number of images (highlighted row in Figure below).  Image Removed

There is a good chance the error occurred because of network latency and simply re-trying the download will often work.   To begin the retry depends upon whether or not (A) the NBIA application is still active or (B) the user has been auto-logged off.

(A). Image Recovery, NBIA Application Still Active.  In the Data Basket, above the check-box column (2nd column from right), click "Select".  This will turn on check boxes for every series in the Data Basket.  Then, find the row (lower portion of the Figure below)matching the <Patient ID, Study Instance UID, Series Instance UID> belonging to the Error in the Download Manager window (upper portion of the Figure below); turn-off the check-mark in this box by clicking on it (the arrow-pointer in the lower portion of the Figure below shows the box after clicking the check-mark off).  Then, above the columns, to the right, click "Remove Selected Items".  This will remove all series from the Data Basket except for those un-checked.  Click on the Download Manager to the upper left and observe the download as described at the beginning of this section.  Repeat for each error in the Download manager window.  If an error persists for the same series, please notify The Cancer Imaging Archive team.

you may ignore this message)*.  *The error or even multiple errors will not stop the download process.  The Download Manager will continue on through the download basket; when finished, it then re-tries those series with Status = Error.  Eventually, all items scheduled for download will download.  To make sure the download is complete and free of errors, scroll up and down through the Download Manager window and make sure the Status for each line (series) is "Complete".  If an error persists for a series, please notify The Cancer Imaging Archive team.

(B). NBIA Application No Longer Active (user logged out).  If this happens, leave the Download Manager window active and do not close.  Re-launch the NBIA application.  This time, for each error in the still-open Download Manager window, search in the NBIA application only for these series.  Save each to the Data Basket.  When all of the errant series have been put into the Data Basket, then begin the Download Manager once again. If three (3) errors occurred and the download stalled before completing, you would handle the errors in the same way as (A) and (B) above.  In addition, you will have to note where the Download Manager stopped and which series were never downloaded.  Do whatever is easiest – selectively remove series from the Data Basket that have already been downloaded OR clear the Data Basket and commence a new search.
