NCI's National Clinical Trials Network (NCTN) is a collection of organizations and clinicians that coordinates and supports cancer clinical trials at more than 3,000 sites across the United States and Canada. The NCTN provides the infrastructure for NCI-funded treatment, screening, and diagnosis trials to improve the lives of patients with cancer.

The NCTN explicitly requires data sharing of the patient-level clinical data in https://nctn-data-archive.nci.nih.gov/view-trials, but the site does not support archival of image data. The Cancer Imaging Program which funds TCIA recently identified this as a major opportunity to enhance the value of these NCTN data sharing efforts by collecting and archiving the corresponding imaging from NCTN trials where available.  To accomplish this a 5-year funding commitment was established to grow TCIA to expand efforts for collecting, de-identifying, and hosting the imaging data from NCI-supported clinical trials. This effort enables TCIA to establish and manage an additional image data collection center focused specifically on clinical trial data accrual to meet the growing demand for publicly available image data with associated clinical trial reporting results, demographics and patient outcomes.
